A forklift operator freezes when he sees what is hidden in the toilet.

In the port city of Port Elizabeth, a dockworker had a shock when entering the workplace restroom.

Inside, there was a huddled ball of fur, seemingly motionless. But suddenly, it began to growl…

It was early August when the dockworker was supposed to take a quick restroom break at work.

Frozen in disbelie

But as soon as he opened the restroom door, he froze. Inside, an unidentifiable ball of fur was behind the toilet.

He saw nothing but fur at first. But suddenly, the animal began to growl. The worker then realized what it was: a wild caracal.

The caracal bears a strong resemblance to the lynx, but they are not closely related. The desert lynx can measure approximately 65 centimeters in length and weigh up to 20 kilograms. It primarily inhabits the southern regions of the Sahara Desert.

He slammed the door.

Panicked, the man slammed the door and immediately called for help, which came in the form of Arnold Slabbert, who works in the area to rescue wild animals.

Slabbert is accustomed to rescuing wild animals that have strayed, but he had never had to save a caracal before, as they are rarely seen in inhabited areas.

“There are so many ships and containers in the port that it’s the last place you would think a caracal could appear. It’s absolutely incredible that he wasn’t harmed during his journey in the port, which is open 24 hours a day,” explained Slabbert to The Dodo.

In the wild.

It is highly likely that the poor caracal was hunted by humans and displaced to the port.

After many twists and turns, Slabbert managed to capture the caracal and place it in a cage.

Less than half an hour later, Slabbert was able to release the caracal back into the wild, where it belongs.

“She was very nervous, and you could see how confused she was,” Slabbert explained to The Dodo.
