A bear intrudes on a family picnic and jumps onto the table – but its mother’s sudden move is incredibly clever.

I think we’ve all seen strange things happen during family picnics and barbecues. Whether it’s drunken aunts, squabbling siblings, or wasp stings, these events are usually unpredictable and entertaining.

Entertaining, however, probably isn’t the word a Mexican family would use after a recent experience at Chipinque Ecological Park in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León.

A truly shocking video has surfaced, showing a family enjoying their picnic at a table before a hungry black bear crashes the scene and slowly and methodically begins to help itself to their food…

I don’t have much experience with bears, and I’m grateful for that. They’re magnificent creatures, don’t get me wrong, but there’s something about the fur, claws, teeth, feisty demeanor, size, and teeth that puts me off spending any time near them.

That being said, I usually don’t mind watching them in documentaries or in the hundreds of clips you can find on YouTube. For the most part, they’re curious critters, more like oversized pets, more than capable of doing the kind of antics that make for good viral videos these days.

A Mexican family can attest to that, as their encounter with a black bear during lunchtime turned out to be extremely tense.

According to the available information, mother Silvia Macías and her children were enjoying their meal at Chipinque Ecological Park when the bear appeared and decided to help itself to what belonged to them.

Even worse, the horrified family had not been warned about the bear’s arrival and could only sit frozen as the animal climbed onto their picnic table and began devouring the food they had brought with them.

Mom Silvia revealed that her son, Santiago, is afraid of animals, so she had to be quick-witted (and, one might add, quite courageous) to ensure their safety.

« Santiago is very afraid of animals, be it a cat or a dog, any animal. I didn’t want him to see it and start screaming or running, » Silvia explained.

« I was afraid that if he got scared or screamed, it would scare the bear. »

« I just think I’m a mother who protected her little one. »

The video of the family’s encounter with the bear was posted on TikTok, where it has since accumulated over six million views.

Fortunately, this time, the bear ate the food and left without bothering anyone else.

Wow! Incredible footage, I think we can all agree. If you found this story interesting, check out the bulldog puppy who saved its « owner’s » life by chewing their toe down to the bone – before hospital scans revealed the unthinkable…
