A young woman recently made the choice to be sterilized because she no longer wants to menstruate or have children.
If some people sometimes tend to forget it, women’s bodies belong to them and a young woman from Quimper has just demonstrated this by taking a radical decision that is causing a lot of talk.
At the age of 26, this young woman, whom we will call Marie, no longer has a uterus because she underwent a hysterectomy in July 2021. A choice that she assumes and that she does not regret today .
As she explains to the Telegram, the young woman has taken the plunge after years of careful consideration.
Thus, from adolescence, when her » periods are particularly painful and abundant «, Marie is already thinking about the possibility of sterilization, especially since she does not feel the desire to have children.
“ I tried four or five pills, twice the contraceptive implant, once the copper IUD. With the latter, I had my period every 15 days. I was never calm, in constant anemia. I often thought: «I would so much like to stop having my periods». It had become unbearable from a psychological point of view , ”she tells the Breton daily.
After some research on the subject, she made her decision and turned to a surgeon at Saumur Hospital, but the latter, although agreeing to ligate her tubes, nevertheless refused to remove her uterus.
“ For him, removing the womb would have created a vacuum, spiritually speaking. He gave me a whole speech on «the sacred feminine», without lecturing me. I was a little disappointed when I left this appointment, even if he agreed to send me a letter attesting to our appointment and to the fact that he had informed me of the definitive nature of the operation” , explains Mary.
You should know that in France, only a few surgeons agree to perform this type of intervention. But under the law, sterilization for contraceptive purposes is possible from the age of 18, provided there is a four-month reflection period between the first medical consultation and the operation. Marie will finally be operated on in July 2021 in a private clinic in Île-de-France by a surgeon accustomed to hysterectomies.
“ The doctor took the time to explain to me what the operation consisted of, the consequences on the body and the fact that it was irreversible. I told him that I was ready to take the leap. We set a date right away ,” she said.
Since then, her life has changed and Marie seems more fulfilled than ever. “ I’ve never been better in my sneakers than since I no longer have a uterus. (…) It’s nice. I no longer have this supreme anxiety of forgetting the pill or having my period late. It’s the best decision I’ve made in my life. And, a year and a half later, I don’t regret it at all , ”says the young woman, happy.
