The new series about the Harry Potter universe is going to have a brand new cast. Wanting to show inclusivity and diversity, the producers could choose a black actress to interpret the role of Hermione.
It’s official: a new series on the Harry Potter saga is about to see the light of day. It would be an adaptation of the seven novels by JK Rowling, who will be the program’s executive producer. Made over a period of ten years, the seasons will be “faithful to the original books and allow Harry Potter and his incredible adventures to be discovered by new audiences around the world”.
Who says new series, says new cast. According to the first sources, this program will have an inclusive approach and actors of color could be present. The producers want to emphasize diversity, which was not the case in the Hogwarts school represented in the films.
According to Jeff Sneider, entertainment expert and host of “The Hot Mic” podcast, Hermione could be played by a black actress. This decision would not be a first since the young witch has already been played by an actress of color, Noma Dumezweni, in the adaptation of the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, in 2015. A choice which had been controversial and that JK Rowling had defended by saying that in her books, she had never provided information about Hermione’s skin color.
Anyway, we will have to be patient and wait a few years before discovering this series on our screens.
