Valerie Reid is an incredible woman who couldn’t bear to see elderly dogs spending their final days alone. So, she made a remarkable decision and transformed her Missouri home into the Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary, a loving hospice for old dogs. At any given time, the sanctuary cares for up to 80 senior pups.
The idea for the sanctuary took root in 2017 when Valerie encountered difficulty finding a home for her father’s elderly Doberman. Despite searching tirelessly for a rescue organization that would take her in, Valerie faced disappointment due to the dog’s age. Determined to provide a solution, she decided to create a sanctuary where elderly dogs could find love and care in their twilight years.
Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary welcomes dogs whose owners have passed away or moved into retirement homes. These dogs often spend extended periods in shelters without finding forever homes. Valerie opens her doors to them, providing a warm and nurturing environment where they can live openly as part of the family.
The dogs have free rein in Valerie’s home and move freely between the two buildings on the property. Wherever Valerie goes, they go too, experiencing a sense of belonging and being treated as cherished family members. Witnessing the transformation these dogs undergo when they realize they are safe and loved is the most rewarding part of Valerie’s work.
Valerie’s selfless dedication has not gone unnoticed, and her non-profit Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary has garnered attention and support from the community. Through her sanctuary, she has created a haven for elderly dogs, ensuring that their golden years are filled with comfort, compassion, and companionship.
Valerie’s inspiring story serves as a reminder of the importance of providing care and love to animals in their later stages of life. The Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary is not just a place for dogs to find solace, but also a testament to the profound impact one person’s compassion can have on the lives of many.
